The Psychedelic Closet
A recent podcast appearance on The Psychedelic Closet with Maurice Schill
Last October I went for a walk with Maurice along Melbourne’s Yarra river. Along the way we recorded a podcast for his yet-to-launch project ‘The Psychedelic Closet’.
I met Maurice when he attended a Voicecraft event earlier in 2023, and he has since become a member of the Voicecraft Network.
It was beautiful sunny day and I really appreciated Maurice’s enthusiasm and care for understanding the complex phenomenon that is psychedelic experience as it presents to psyche and culture.
You can listen to the dialogue with Maurice here:
Psychedelics have been a deep interest of mine since my later adolescent years. Unsurprisingly so, given their near ubiquity of presence across cultures over many thousands of years. Yet until relatively recently, as many reading this will be aware, it has been taboo to speak of personal experience with psychedelics.
This podcast is a reasonable introduction to aspects of my present relation to psychedelics from the perspective of truth, cultural transformation, and the dignity of seeking. I think I recall touching on the limitations of a purely therapeutic approach to relating with psychedelics, the hazards of foolhardy psychedelic capitalism with respect to ‘transformation’, ‘culture-change’ etc, and something about black holes.
I remain open and committed to collaborating toward the wiser re-integration of psychedelic experience into culture. It’s a field that Voicecraft will remain in touch with in the Australian context and more broadly. But it’s also something I have an interest to engage with as a guest in other contexts, as with my talks on Psychedelic Philosophy at Esoteric festival and with Maurice in this podcast.
I hope those who listen enjoy this walk along the Yarra. I’ll be an interested observer to see where Maurice takes his project next.
Discernment on the Way,
Tim
