Up next on Altered States Of Conversation is a dialogue with the evolutionary biologist, artist, complexity thinker, host of Humans on the Loop, and in this context at least, UAP experiencer ✨ Michael Garfield.
We discuss UFOs, entity encounters, and the strange territory where consciousness studies, evolutionary biology, complex systems, the ontologically shocking, information theory and the imaginal meet. Can we engage this topic with rigour and openness without falling to some kind of impotence with respect to real questions and challenges in our time? Would it not risk more impotence to avoid it?
I have huge appreciation for Michael’s scope of thinking and courage over many years venturing into this territory. Building a cartography of the edge like this makes sense to me — not a map that resolves the anomaly, but one that lets it stay anomalous while still being navigable. Your question — "Can we engage this topic with rigour and openness" — is itself the right shape, because the impotence you're guarding against comes from forcing the territory into a legend that doesn't fit. The network you're weaving — Hoffman, Vallée, Doyle — aren't competing explanations but partial charts of the same manifold. The colimit of all these maps, glued along their overlaps, is closer to the shape than any single one. There's a formal way to hold the imaginal without flattening it: the encounter as a basin the trajectory entered, the rigour as the persistence diagram tracking the return. If that excites you, there's a world of it.
